Info Edge, the company known for building and backing some of India’s most successful internet businesses, is stepping into a new phase of startup investing. The firm has launched a dedicated growth-stage investment vehicle with a capital commitment of Rs 250 crore.
This marks the company’s first fund specifically focused on later-stage startups — a shift that signals its ambition to play a bigger role in scaling India’s technology-driven companies.
The new fund, called B8 Fund-I, may also raise money from external investors. That means the total corpus could eventually exceed the initial Rs 250 crore.
What Is B8 Fund-I and Why It Matters
A Dedicated Growth-Stage Vehicle
B8 Fund-I is designed to back growth-stage, tech-enabled companies that are either based in India or primarily focused on the Indian market.
Unlike early-stage funds that invest when startups are just getting started, growth-stage funds typically support companies that have already proven their business models and are looking to expand rapidly.
The fund has been registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) as a Category II Alternative Investment Fund. It will have a tenure of eight years from its first closing, giving it a long runway to support portfolio companies.
Potential to Raise More Capital
Although the initial commitment stands at Rs 250 crore, the fund may bring in additional capital from outside sponsors. If that happens, the overall size of the fund could grow significantly beyond its starting corpus.
This flexibility allows Info Edge to scale its bets depending on investor interest and market opportunities.
Info Edge’s Expanding Startup Investment Ecosystem
Info Edge is not new to startup investing. Over the years, it has quietly built a strong investment platform across multiple stages.
Early-Stage Investment Platforms
The company already operates four early-stage investment vehicles:
- Info Edge Ventures, which has raised Rs 2,300 crore across three funds
- Capital 2B, with a corpus of Rs 280 crore
- Redstart Labs, focused on AI-led startups
- Direct investments made from the company’s own balance sheet
Info Edge Ventures operates in a 50:50 partnership with Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund Temasek, adding global credibility and capital strength to its early-stage strategy.
In May last year, the company said shareholders had approved a plan to invest up to Rs 1,000 crore in the third fund of Info Edge Ventures as part of its effort to institutionalise its startup investing platform.
With B8 Fund-I, Info Edge is now adding a clear growth-stage layer to this ecosystem.
A Track Record of Spotting Winners Early
One reason this new fund is drawing attention is Info Edge’s impressive track record.
Through its venture vehicles, the company has backed startups such as:
- Gnani AI
- Ixigo
- Shiprocket
- Zingbus
- Truemeds
Beyond its structured funds, Info Edge has also made some iconic early bets directly from its balance sheet. Notably, it invested in Zomato and Policybazaar during their early years — long before they became publicly listed companies.
These investments have significantly strengthened Info Edge’s reputation as a long-term, patient capital provider.
Why the Shift to Growth-Stage Investing?
India’s startup ecosystem has matured over the past decade. While early-stage capital has become more widely available, growth-stage funding often requires deeper pockets and longer investment horizons.
By launching B8 Fund-I, Info Edge is positioning itself to:
- Continue supporting startups beyond the seed and early rounds
- Capture value as companies scale and approach profitability or IPO
- Strengthen its influence across the startup lifecycle
This move also helps the company diversify its investment exposure. Instead of exiting early-stage bets quickly, it can now participate in later funding rounds and remain invested as businesses expand.
Strong Financial Performance Supports Expansion
The timing of the new fund launch aligns with solid financial results.
For the quarter ended December 31, Info Edge reported operating revenue of Rs 819 crore. Net profit rose 10 percent year-on-year to Rs 317 crore, compared to Rs 288 crore in the same period last year.
This steady financial growth provides the company with both the confidence and capital base to deepen its investment strategy.
The Bigger Picture: Institutionalising Startup Investing
Info Edge’s evolution from a strategic investor making balance-sheet bets to running multiple structured funds reflects a broader shift.
Startup investing is no longer a side activity — it is becoming a well-organised, institutionalised vertical within the company.
With:
- Early-stage platforms
- AI-focused incubators
- Partnerships with global sovereign funds
- And now a dedicated growth-stage vehicle
Info Edge is building a full-spectrum investment framework.
This layered approach allows it to identify promising startups early, nurture them, and continue backing them as they scale.
What B8 Fund-I Could Mean for Indian Startups
For founders, the new fund offers another domestic source of growth capital at a time when global venture funding can be unpredictable.
A long-tenure, India-focused fund like B8 Fund-I provides:
- Stability
- Strategic guidance
- Alignment with long-term growth
As Indian tech startups increasingly look toward public markets or global expansion, access to patient growth capital will be crucial.
With its track record and expanding investment muscle, Info Edge appears ready to play that role.
A Strategic Bet on India’s Tech Future
Info Edge’s Rs 250 crore B8 Fund-I is more than just another venture fund. It signals a strategic shift toward deeper, more sustained engagement with India’s technology ecosystem.
Having backed some of the country’s most successful startups in their formative years, the company is now positioning itself to power the next wave of scaling tech businesses.
If its past bets are any indication, this new growth-stage fund could end up shaping the next generation of Indian tech leaders.
