Rediff Gets NPCI Nod for TPAP License, Set to Launch RediffPay UPI App

Rediff.com India has taken a major step into the digital payments space after receiving final approval from the National Payments Corporation of India for its Third-Party Application Provider license. The approval clears the way for the company to launch its own UPI-based payments platform, RediffPay.

With this regulatory milestone in place, Rediff has officially begun Closed User Group testing, a mandatory phase before a full public rollout on the Unified Payments Interface network.

Entry Into the UPI Ecosystem

The TPAP license allows Rediff to operate as a UPI application, enabling users to make interoperable digital payments directly through the platform.

Following the NPCI approval, Rediff is now preparing to introduce RediffPay as a customer-centric UPI app focused on financial wellness rather than just transactions.

The company aims to differentiate its offering in a crowded payments market by encouraging better money habits alongside everyday payments.

Focus on Financial Wellness

Unlike traditional UPI apps that mainly emphasize peer-to-peer transfers and merchant payments, RediffPay is being positioned as a financial wellness platform.

Features Planned for RediffPay

According to the company, the app is designed to help users:

  • Make secure UPI payments
  • Develop saving habits
  • Access investment opportunities
  • Explore credit options

By integrating payments with broader financial tools, Rediff hopes to appeal to users looking for a more holistic approach to managing their money.

Leadership Commentary

Vishal Mehta, Chairman and Managing Director of Rediff.com India Ltd, described the approval as a pivotal moment for the company.

He said the license enables Rediff to deliver secure and interoperable UPI services through RediffPay while advancing its long-standing goal of expanding financial inclusion in India.

Mehta added that the company is focused on building simple and intuitive digital payment experiences that are accessible to a wide range of users across the country.

Why This Matters for Rediff

Rediff is one of India’s early internet companies, best known for its news, email, and online services. The move into UPI marks a significant expansion of its digital offerings.

Strategic Shift

By entering the payments ecosystem, Rediff is tapping into one of India’s fastest-growing digital segments. UPI has become the backbone of everyday digital transactions, handling billions of payments each month.

The launch of RediffPay could help the company deepen user engagement and open up new revenue streams tied to financial services.

Competitive Landscape

The Indian UPI market is dominated by established players such as PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm. Entering this space presents both opportunity and challenge.

Rediff’s strategy of focusing on financial wellness and inclusion may help it carve out a niche, particularly among users seeking guidance on saving, investing, and responsible credit use.

What Comes Next

With Closed User Group testing now underway, Rediff will collect feedback, test system stability, and ensure compliance before opening RediffPay to the wider public.

The company has not yet announced an official launch date, but the approval suggests that a broader rollout could happen in the coming months.

A New Chapter for Rediff

The NPCI approval marks an important milestone in Rediff’s evolution from a legacy internet brand to a broader digital services platform.

As RediffPay prepares to enter India’s highly competitive UPI ecosystem, its success will depend on how effectively it blends payments with financial wellness tools and delivers value to users beyond basic transactions.
